NUS-OceanX expedition sets sail to study largely unexplored part of the Indian Ocean
Researchers from Singapore, South-east Asia and the Pacific, and the United States set off on Oct 7 from the Marina at Keppel Bay to study a largely unexplored part of the eastern Indian Ocean, as part of the Republic’s commitment to understand and protect marine biodiversity.

One of Singapore’s three remaining giant clam species has not been recorded here in over 20 years, with one expert saying its “disappearance” could reflect the declining quality of habitats suitable for this species. The alarm bells raised by NUS marine scientist Neo Mei Lin about the fate of the small giant clam (Tridacna maxima) in Singapore comes amid a global review of the conservation status of all 12 species of giant clams, which are iconic organisms found in the Indo-Pacific.

Singapore launches 15-month study to assess oil spill impact on marine biodiversity. As part of the monitoring effort, researchers will collect sediment samples from the intertidal zone in coastal areas affected by the oil spill, said Dr Tan Koh Siang, a principal research fellow at NUS Tropical Marine Science Institute (TMSI).
