Singapore to upgrade coastal monitoring sensors to measure radioactivity, waves
SINGAPORE – Singapore’s coastal monitoring network, which has been keeping tabs on water quality around the country for over 10 years, will be upgraded to include sensors that can measure radioactivity as well as wave parameters, The Straits Times has learnt.

One of Singapore’s three remaining giant clam species has not been recorded here in over 20 years, with one expert saying its “disappearance” could reflect the declining quality of habitats suitable for this species. The alarm bells raised by NUS marine scientist Neo Mei Lin about the fate of the small giant clam (Tridacna maxima) in Singapore comes amid a global review of the conservation status of all 12 species of giant clams, which are iconic organisms found in the Indo-Pacific.

New Centre of Excellence to boost Singapore’s coastal protection measures and flood resilience
As the host institution, NUS will contribute resources and expertise across the university to support the new institute. CFI Singapore can draw on the University’s research talents and facilities in Ocean Infrastructure and Renewables, Resilient Infrastructure and Climate Change Mitigation. In addition, research institutes on campus, such as the NUS Centre for Nature-based Climate Solutions (CNCS) and the Tropical Marine Science Institute (TMSI), will also contribute towards this national initiative.

Tiger anemone found in Singapore confirmed to be new species after decade’s research
The confirmed new species is commonly called tiger anemone because of its stripes and ability to swallow prey larger than itself. While the creature has been noted by marine life enthusiasts since the 2000s, sea anemone researcher Dr Nicholas Yap took about a decade to conclude that this species is like no other.

WWF-Singapore, NUS to pilot coral restoration in deeper waters in Southern Islands
For the pilot, the corals are first grown in nursery tanks under low-light conditions before being transplanted to light-limited reef zones in the Southern Islands. The project is a partnership between the World Wide Fund for Nature Singapore (WWF-Singapore) and the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) Tropical Marine Science Institute (TMSI), together with National Parks Board (NParks).
