On 16 October 2018, in celebration of its 20th Anniversary, the Tropical Marine Science Institute hosted the symposium Environment Challenges for a Tropical Port City: Celebrating 20 years of marine science.
Approximately 250 guests from various organisations – partner agencies, organisations, NGOs, and colleagues and friends from NUS and NTU were present that day.
The Guest of Honour was Deputy President (Research and Technology) and Distinguished Professor at the National University of Singapore, Professor Chen Tsuhan. Also in attendance were Professor Lim Pin, Chairman of the TMSI Management Board, several members of the TMSI Management Board, as well as the Chief Executives of our partner agencies such as the Maritime Port Authority and Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority.
Professor Lui Pao Chen, Advisor to the National Research Foundation and member of TMSI Management Board and one of the pioneers of marine science research in Singapore, was invited to give a lecture. He was followed by keynote speaker, Professor Chou Loke Ming from TMSI’s Marine Biology and Ecology Lab.
Throughout the day, guests were given an insight into the various research that TMSI has been delving into – from building sensing and monitoring networks in local waters, to monitoring ecosystem dynamics, biodiversity discoveries from the shallow waters to the deep sea, and scientific communication’s role in marine conservation.
To ensure that all of TMSI’s research topics were touched upon during the symposium, a poster presentation was also included. Many of the research that were not shared in speaker presentations thus were covered here.
