From the Director’s Desk
Director’s message
Over 30 years ago a small group of dedicated scientists had the vision and drive to propose what was to become TMSI. They understood that as a tropical island nation, with amazingly diverse marine life but also large and critical maritime industries, it was essential to study Singapore’s marine environment from a multidisciplinary perspective if it was going to be managed sustainably.
As TMSI has matured it has established itself a leading centre for oceanography and marine biology, climate and weather modelling, biodiversity research and restoration, and underwater sensing and acoustics. Its research teams include world-renowned biologists, ecologists, and engineers that continue to push knowledge frontiers and innovate solutions.
The work conducted by TMSI is more relevant today than ever as we endeavour to find ways to mitigate the worst effects climate change. Ocean warming and acidification, sea level rise and increased storm surge, all represent major threats to human populations in low lying areas as well as coastal ecosystems and biodiversity. A concerted and integrated effort is required and TMSI is well-positioned to take up this challenge.
Working with public, private, and government sectors is central to our ability to make change and we welcome enquiries, collaborations, and new opportunities to engage with the stakeholders of Singapore’s marine futures.
