Marine Data and Information System (MDIS)

The system has the ability to mix different datasets on a common mapping platform in a unique visualization enabling prompt information dissemination and accurate analysis.  The ability to easily present diverse data on a common map distinguishes the system from other information services and creates a most valuable commodity applicable to a wide range of public and private enterprises.

MDIS provides a one-stop database system for marine biological and environmental information for the region.  MDIS was inaugurated by a contract to MITL for the development of an information system to assess the economic and environmental impact of heavy shipping activities in the Malacca Straits.  The database of the system contains historic and current information including, topography, bathymetry, biodiversity, economic activities, environmental quality measurements (historical & current), sources of hazards and pollutants.

The amount of data currently in MDIS is sufficient for management purposes and the system can map marine related physical and biological variables to a resolution of 1:60,000.  The system will be applied as an Integrated Environmental Impact Assessment tool to support the TMSI's Marine Biology and Biotechnology Programme.  MDIS has the potential to be the one-stop database for Southeast Asia and will complement the expertise of the National University of Singapore's marine policy group.
