Marine Biotechnology

Biotechnology is a way of using nature's powerful strategies to produce more effective medicines, increase yields of higher quality crops, and perform more sensitive environmental monitoring.  Marine organisms are a particularly rich resource for natural products.  However, it is crucial that any exploitation of marine resources be done in a manner that is sustainable and does not damage the ecosystem.  TMSI's Marine Biotechnology programme combines the development of commercial uses for marine resources with new methods for ensuring sustainability of resources.

The Marine Biotechnology programme will study four main topics:

Natural products research

Biotoxins

Oil Spills

Biofouling
