Marine Biology

The Marine Biology Programme encompasses an integrated range of research areas, including taxonomy and systematics of marine organisms, marine biodiversity, environmental management using bioindicators and biomarkers, and marine molecular biology.

The work contributes to a better understanding and consequently better management of our coastal resources.

Some areas covered are:

Marine biodiversity

Ecosystem function

Environmental Management

Research Collaborations

In addition to in-house research activities, the MBBP of TMSI actively develops research collaborations with other departments within the National University of Singapore, external agencies and research organisations.

Research collaborations between TMSI and the Singapore Maritime and Port Authority (MPA)

A one-year monitoring programme to study the impact of the Evoikos Oil Spill, consisting of the flowing multidisciplinary research areas:

Study of the impacts of sea wall molluscan communities

Assessment on the impact on coral reef communities

Assessment on the impact on productivity of reef organisms

Monitoring of oil accumulation or degradation in the marine environment

Bioremediation studies

Research collaboration between TMSI and the Plymouth Environmental Research Centre (PERC), University of Plymouth, UK

Ecotoxicology research which incorporates techniques based on biochemical, cellular and molecular biomarkers of pollutants in tropical marine invertebrates.
